The Boy Scouts of America has a long and troubling history of sexual abuse by leaders. Despite numerous warnings and red flags, the organization has failed to take adequate steps to protect children in its care. As a result, many boys have been victimized by sexual predators posing as scout leaders. If you are a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, an experienced and compassionate attorney can help you seek justice by filing a civil lawsuit against the responsible parties. Attorney Michael Rehm will help you do that. He will use his knowledge and understanding of the delicate nature of these cases to hold abusers accountable. Negligent Hiring and Retention

Negligent hiring and retention are two of the most critical issues to consider when litigating a sexual abuse case. Organizations that work with children have a responsibility to ensure that their employees are safe to work with minors. Similarly, if an employee is allowed to continue working after being convicted of or accused of a sex crime, the employer might be held liable if that employee goes on to commit another crime. When organizations fail to take the proper actions, they can be held liable for any damages that occur as a result of their negligence. This is an issue of significant importance within the Boy Scouts organization.

The Boy Scouts Troubled Sexual Abuse History

In 2010, the Los Angeles Times published an investigation which found that at least five hundred scouts had been molested by troop leaders over the previous 20 years. The investigation also found that the Boy Scouts had kept secret files documenting these abuses but had failed to report them to law enforcement. In 2012, another investigation by the Times found that Predator-Proof Your Kids, a program designed to prevent child sexual abuse, had only been adopted by 11% of troops despite being available for nearly two decades.

These investigations sparked outrage and led to numerous lawsuits against the Boy Scouts. In 2016, one such lawsuit resulted in the release of over 14,000 pages of previously secret documents detailing more than 125 years of sexual abuse within the organization. These documents revealed that the Boy Scouts had received hundreds of thousands of reports of sexual abuse but had kept them hidden from the public.

Child Sexual Abuse Cases in Long Beach, CA

In 2019, dozens of Boy Scout leaders were accused of child sexual abuse – 15 of whom were in Long Beach, CA. The frightening reality is that sexual abuse allegations against Boy Scout leaders, who essentially have unfettered access to young, impressionable children, is nothing new. It was said that many lawsuits would be filed. Since then, at least one lawsuit was filed against a leader in Long Beach, and it was only possible because of the California Child Victims Act that revived many childhood sexual abuse cases where the statute of limitations had passed.

Unfortunately, many victims of sexual abuse are hesitant to come forward because they fear that their abuser will retaliate against them or think they will not be believed. The Child Victims Act has given survivors a new chance to use their voice. While financial compensation will not take back what was done to you, it can be one step in your journey of finding closure and holding the responsible parties accountable.
