During the Gold Rush years, Marysville was one of California's largest cities. That history is showcased in the city's museums and the historic Silver Dollar Saloon.
Fourteen miles southeast of Marysville on California Highway 65, the agricultural community of Wheatland offers one of the region's best farmers markets. Shoppers can find fresh fruit, pistachios, organic eggs, and just about anything that can be harvested in Northern California.
While life can be tranquil in Marysville and Wheatland, tranquility is shattered when cars collide. Marysville has a particularly troubling rate of car accidents.
Marysville Traffic Accidents
In the most recent year reported by the California Office of Traffic Safety, 84 victims were injured or killed in Marysville traffic accidents. Compared to 102 California cities of similar size, Marysville had the fourth highest injury accident rate after adjusting for population and miles driven.
While most of the accidents caused injuries to car occupants, six of the 84 victims were pedestrians. The OTS determined that Marysville had the 15th highest rate of pedestrian accidents among 102 comparable cities.
Four of the injury victims in Marysville were riding bicycles. Compared to 102 similar cities, Marysville had the 17th worst rate of bicycle accident injuries.
Why are there so many traffic accident injuries in Marysville? The two most important contributors to Marysville accidents are drunk drivers and speeders. Fourteen of the accident victims were injured in alcohol-related accidents, while 19 were injured in speed-related collisions. The OTS ranked Marysville as the third worst city in the category of alcohol-related accidents and the fourth worst city in the category of speed-related accidents.
Wheatland Traffic Accidents
The statistics in Wheatland are much better than those in Marysville. Wheatland is a smaller town, but even after adjusting for population, the OTS gave Wheatland a better traffic accident ranking.
Wheatland had only four injury accidents in the last year that OTS analyzed. Compared to 75 communities of similar size, Wheatland had the 42nd highest injury accident rate.
All of Wheatland's injury victims were car occupants. None of the accidents were alcohol-related. The OTS did not report speed as a factor in any accident.
Marysville and Wheatland Traffic Accident Lawsuits
Most claims against negligent drivers are resolved without filing suit, but if prompt and fair settlement cannot be reached, a lawsuit will be filed for injuries occurring in Marysville or Wheatland in the Yuba County Superior Court.
One of the five Yuba County judges presides over motor vehicle accident lawsuits. The judge manages cases efficiently. Court statistics show that 81% of collision lawsuits are resolved within one year. Within two years, 91% have been resolved.
When cases settle without a trial, injury victims do not necessarily need to appear in court. Lawyers will often appear in person or by telephone for routine scheduling conferences. When injury victims do need to make a court appearance, hearings are held at the Yuba County Courthouse at 215 Fifth Street in Marysville.
In the most recently reported fiscal year, 34 new lawsuits were filed in Yuba County regarding motor vehicle accidents. In that same year, 44 motor vehicle accident lawsuits were resolved. All the resolved cases settled before trial.
