About one in nine girls under the age of 18 is sexually abused by an adult. Boys may be less likely to be abused, although they may also be less likely to report abuse. Research shows that the likelihood of abuse increases when boys participate in groups or organizations that expose them to abusers.
Trained specialists at the Multidisciplinary Interview Center in Roseville have interviewed hundreds of children in recent years who were confirmed or suspected victims of sexual abuse. Providing a safe and comfortable interview setting for children is a key to obtaining evidence that can be used to identify, prosecute, and punish abusers.
While the criminal justice system can take steps to protect society from sexual predators, it is not equipped to take actions against the institutions that make it possible for staff members and volunteers to groom children. Nor does the criminal justice system provide compensation to pay for therapy and other services that help victims cope with the ongoing impact of abuse.
Roseville Institutions and Child Sexual Abuse
Some sexual abusers are relatives of the victim. Occasionally, an abuser is a stranger. In a significant number of cases, abuse occurs in institutions and organizations that parents trust to care for their children. Examples include:
- Schools
- After-school athletic programs
- After-school music and cultural programs
- Community athletic programs, such as Little League
- Community centers
- Youth organizations, such as Boy Scouts
- Churches and religious organizations
- Daycare businesses
Every institution, organization, or business that is trusted to care for children when parents are not present has a responsibility to protect those children from harm. That responsibility includes screening staff members and volunteers for criminal records, responding immediately and appropriately to reports of suspicious activity, and supervising staff members and volunteers while they are in contact with children.
Remedies for Sexually Abused Children and Their Parents
Child sexual assault victims can bring lawsuits for compensation to pay for the abuse victim's psychological counseling and therapy. KidsFirst Counseling and Family Resources Center in Roseville can be a good starting place for traumatized victims of sexual abuse who want to find a therapist.
The California legislature has extended the time for adults to sue their sexual abusers. Under the old law, victims needed to sue before they reached the age of 26. The new law allows victims to sue before they reach the age of 40 unless the claim was already barred by the old law. However, claims that were barred under the old law can be filed until the end of 2022.
The new law applies to lawsuits against abusers and institutions that negligently failed to protect children from abuse. Adults who are over the age of 26 should get prompt legal advice about legal claims based on sexual abuse that occurred when they were children.
Victims should also be compensated for their emotional distress, pain, suffering, anxiety, humiliation, and loss of self-esteem. Roseville School Child Sexual Abuse Lawyer Michael Rehm can help victims and their families understand their legal rights, including their right to seek legal remedies against institutions that made it possible for sex offenders to abuse them.
