Once famous for its Mother Lode gold mines, Amador County is now known for vineyards that grow the finest Zinfandel grapes in California. Dozens of wineries in the Shenandoah Valley produce award winning Zinfandel wines along with other delicious varietals.
Winery hopping and enjoyable evenings spent in taverns along Highway 49 and Highway 88 might contribute to Amador County's traffic accident rate. Despite its relatively low population, 292 crash victims were injured or killed in Amador County traffic accidents in 2019.

The OTS compared cities in Amador County to other California cities of equivalent size. After adjusting for population and miles driven, it determined that Ione, the largest incorporated city in Amador County, had the 16th highest accident rate of seventy-four similar cities.
Jackson has a smaller population than Ione, but vehicles travel about twice as many miles on its streets every day as compared to Ione. Jackson had more traffic accidents than Ione in 2019, but because it also had more vehicular traffic, OTS ranked its accident rate as the 27th worst of seventy-four other California small cities.
Sutter Creek is smaller than Ione and Jacksonville but has more traffic than either town. It also had many more injury accidents in 2019 than either Ione or Jackson. The OTS ranked Sutter Creek the third worst of thirty-two comparable California cities.
