Monterey has everything from world-class golf courses and pristine beaches to vibrant shopping districts and amazing restaurants. Unfortunately, it also has too many collisions.
It may seem strange that one of the most idyllic communities in California is also one of the most dangerous cities of its size for drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Compared to 94 similar California cities, after adjusting the data for population and miles driven, the Office of Traffic Safety ranked Monterey as having the sixth worst record of injuries and deaths caused by traffic accidents.
In the most recent year that OTS analyzed, 258 accident victims were injured or killed in Monterey crashes. Of those, 31 were alcohol-involved collisions. The OTS ranked Monterey's record of alcohol-involved traffic accidents as the fifth worst of 94 comparable California cities.
Monterey Pedestrian and Bicycle Accidents
Many of Monterey's environmentally friendly residents enjoy walking or bicycling to work. In a relatively small city like Monterey, walking and biking should be safe activities. The statistics tell a different story.
In the most recent year analyzed by OTS, Monterey had 22 bicycle accidents and 26 pedestrian accidents. In each category, Monterey ranked in the seventh worst position among 94 similar cities.
Many of Monterey's pedestrian and bicycle accidents occur in intersections. Drivers making a left turn too often fail to yield to pedestrians and bicycle riders who are crossing the street. In Monterey, Del Monte Avenue is a frequent source of collisions caused by drivers making a left turn.
Hit-and-Run Accidents in Monterey
Hit-and-run accidents are unusually common in Monterey. The city's 14 hit-and-run collisions caused OTS to rank Monterey as the 14th worst for a city of its size.
Pursuing compensation against a hit-and-run driver can be challenging. If the accident victim is a named insured on a car insurance policy that includes uninsured motorist coverage, the victim can usually recover compensation from that insurer for a hit and run, assuming a police report was filed. Even when the victim is a pedestrian or bicyclist, uninsured motorist coverage is often available.
Monterey Auto Accident Attorney Michael Rehm can explore options to help collision victims recover compensation for their injuries. Claims can be made against polices maintained by negligent drivers, uninsured motorist coverage, or other sources of insurance, such as the coverage that rideshare companies are required to provide to their drivers.
Monterey Traffic Accident Lawsuits
An accident lawsuit that arises out of a collision in Monterey will usually be filed in the Superior Court for Monterey County. Court appearances are made in the Monterey Courthouse located at 1200 Aguajito Road in the City of Monterey. Injury lawsuits are typically heard by one of three judges in a second-floor courtroom.
In the most recent year for which statistics are available, 177 motor vehicle accident lawsuits were filed in Monterey County. Only 136 previously filed traffic accident lawsuits were resolved. None of those were heard by a jury.
Nearly all cases settle, usually before suit is filed. In Monterey County, 76% of motor vehicle lawsuits have settled within one year. Within two years, 91% have settled.
