California Child Victims Act
California implemented a new law in January 2020, allowing hundreds to thousands of individuals across the state to take steps to hold childhood sexual abusers accountable, even if the statute of limitations had previously run. Among other benefits, this new law provides a 3-year window where anyone can file a claim in civil court against their abuser, regardless of how old they were when the abuse happened, how old they are now, and when the abuse occurred. The significance of this law doesn't go unnoticed. It recognizes the difficulty that survivors have coming forward and gives them a new chance to get the justice and closure they deserve.
Opposition From School-Related Organizations
Unsurprisingly, the 3-year window that was opened through the California Child Victims Act was opposed by many school-related groups, such as The Association of California School Administrators, California Association of Private School Organizations, and the Statewide Association of Community Colleges. The fact that there is opposition to The Act further highlights the importance of it. Schools and other organizations shouldn't be off the hook simply because a survivor wasn't ready to come forward at the time that the abuse occurred. The 3-year window closes on December 31, 2022.
