San Luis Obispo Personal Injury Attorney

Artists flock to the historic districts in San Luis Obispo, while gum chewers enjoy an unusual art form of their own in the city's Bubble Gum Alley. The city's charm attracts tourists who share roads with students bicycling to Cal Poly. Unfortunately, not all of the drivers in San Luis Obispo are careful.

California’s Office of Traffic Safety ranks California cities of comparable size according to the number of traffic accidents that cause injuries or deaths within the city limits. After adjusting for population and miles driven, the 226 accident victims in San Luis Obispo in a recent year caused OTS to rank the city 25th out of 94 cities.

Speeders and drunk drivers contribute to San Luis Obispo's below-average ranking. The city ranked 13th out of 94 cities for speed-related injury accidents. It ranked 21st out of 94 for alcohol-involved accidents that caused an injury or death. Even worse, the OTS ranked San Luis Obispo as the seventh worst city of comparable size for injuries or accident fatalities caused by alcohol-impaired drivers under the age of 21.

Motorcycle, Pedestrian, and Bicycle Accidents in San Luis Obispo

Collisions involving motorcycles accounted for 17 of the city's accidents in the most recent year that OTS analyzed. That relatively high number in a small city gave San Luis Obispo the ninth worst record of motorcycle accident injuries and fatalities.

The city's ranking for pedestrian accidents is almost as bad. San Luis Obispo's 27 pedestrian victims caused OTS to rank the city as the 13th worst of the 94 comparable cities.

The city's worst ranking, however, involves accident victims who were riding bicycles. The 34 bicyclists who were injured or killed gave San Luis Obispo the fourth worst record as compared to similar California cities. San Luis Obispo needs to make major changes to protect its bicycle riders from traffic accidents.

Any accident victim who is injured in a collision, as well as families of deceased victims, can seek compensation. SLO Auto Accident Attorney Michael Rehm will help victims whose lives were changed by a San Luis Obispo collision.

San Luis Obispo Traffic Accident Lawsuits

The San Luis Obispo Superior Court handles lawsuits involving traffic accident injuries that occur in San Luis Obispo. The courthouse is located at 1050 Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo.

In the most recent fiscal year for which data is available, 175 new lawsuits were filed in San Luis Obispo County related to motor vehicle accidents. In that same year, 181 previously filed cases were resolved.

Fifteen judges are authorized to hear cases in the Superior Court, although only a few of those will be assigned to personal injury lawsuits at any given time. Despite their small numbers, the judges operate efficiently.

Most cases settle before a lawsuit is filed. Even after filing suit, most cases are resolved by settlement. The Superior Court reports that 71% of car accident lawsuits were resolved within one year and 91% within two years. Of the 181 lawsuits that were resolved in the most recent fiscal year, only four were decided by a jury.
